Girl Scout Camporee

Camporee was awesome... though hot. We went up there Wednesday night to get familiarized with the camp, since we'd never been to that particular property before. We slept in Kornhauser Lodge (pictured below). It was soooo hot... we ate dinner (if lunchables can be considered a dinner) and walked around a bit, trying to stay in the shady spots. When it was bedtime, my youngest started to spike a fever. She felt really hot to the touch. I took her to the nurse's station and got her some ibuprofen, and she cooled down right away. I think it was heat from the day, but whatever the case, I stationed her in front of the only fan. She cooled down and slept well.

Me, on the other hand... let's just say fat girl didn't do so well in the heat!

The next morning, we woke and ate breakfast, then went out to meet the campers! I was one of two Daisy unit leaders, so my baby was with me, while my two older girls went with their Junior unit (a little too happy to be away from mom, if you ask me). The first day, we did crafts. We tie dyed bandanas, decorated foam visors, and made bracelets & necklaces with beads that corresponded to the Girl Scout law. We played on the giant inflatable slip 'n' slide. Then we decided we'd like to take a hike... so we asked the camp director for the shortest, most level path at camp. HA!!!! We were pointed onto the yellow path... which wound up being a mile long (with 5 girls ages 5 1/2-6 1/2) and really up and down - not level at all! This picture is of the only really level part of the path! And about halfway in, the path stopped being so clear and became narrow and overgrown. Needless to say, by the time we got back to the mess hall for supper, everyone was just about too hot and exhausted to eat! After supper we showered and got the girls ready for their campwide activity, which was carnival games in the dark! Super fun!

The next morning was breakfast and kapers, and then we had unit time. We played on the giant inflatable slip 'n' slide, which the girls loved. Then we had lunch. We made nametags with our camp names on them, and we made bracelets filled with colored sand. Very cool! Then it was time for the "wide game," where the aides took the girls and helped them earn a badge. The Brownies earned "Let's Pretend," and the Juniors earned "Theater." My baby was a Daisy but earned her first Brownie try-it! She actually completed all the requirements to bridge to Brownies, and she hasn't even begun her first year as a Daisy yet! My other two girls, who are both Juniors, earned Theater, Finding My Way, and Jewelry badges. Then we had supper (grilled hot dogs and potato packets cooked over the fire), and then the girls gathered around the campfire and made s'mores. Then they went on a night hike to the graveyard (yes, it was an actual graveyard) and told stories. My girl was pooped when she got back! That night at 3:47 a.m., the weather radio went off. Thank goodness it only woke me and two other adults, and not the 30+ girls who were asleep in the building! It went off twice more (alerting us to thunderstorms nearby), and then I fell back asleep.

This is the giant inflatable slip n slide.

This is the bandana that I tie-dyed.

This is the blister I got on my pinky as a result of dropping hot glue from a high temp hot glue gun on my finger. It swelled up to twice this size later on.
The next morning was a flurry of activity - breakfast, packing up, and getting the girls ready to go! It was bittersweet when it was time to leave, but in the end we had a ton of fun, and we're excited for next year already!

Homemade fudgesicles

My girls made these yesterday, and ate them today... wowzers! Talk about a hit! So to make your own fudgesicles, you'll need:

a package of jell-o instant chocolate pudding
chocolate milk

Mix the pudding according to directions on the box, except substituting the chocolate milk in place of the regular milk.

Spoon mixture into ramekins, ice cube trays, or popsicle molds. Freeze for at least 5 hours.

Enjoy!

How in the world...

How in the world has Lady Gaga not been sued for "Born This Way?" It sounds exactly like Madonna's "Express Yourself." Mo, whatcha waiting for? Sue her pants off!

R.I.P.

Verizon Store Guy: Hello, Ma'am. How are you today?
Me: Hopeful...
Verizon Store Guy: *looks cautious* Hopeful about what?
Me: *shows him the phone, watches his eyes widen to comic proportions*
Verizon Store Guy: WOW. Um, okay. What happened? Because those screens are really hard to crack.
Me: I dropped it.
Verizon Store Guy: From the top of a building?
Me: From about knee-height onto pavement.
Verizon Store Guy: Really? Because it takes a lot to crack those. Those are pretty durable. Look (motioning to other Verizon Store Guy, who looks, and gasps). Yeah.
Me: I just dropped it from less than two feet high!
Verizon Store Guy: *doesn't believe me* You must have just dropped it the right way, then.

YA THINK?!?!?

Soooooooooooooo... basically I have no phone right now. What can I say? I got skillz.

Glee

Okay, y'all know by now that I am a mega-huge Glee fan, right? So I am getting excited, the end of the season is nearing, and it looks like there *might* be a chance for my favorite couple to get back together. I have some spare time, so I figure, I'll look for spoilers online, right?

Holy crap on a cracker. My fandom is full of whack jobs!

I went into a Glee forum and started nosing around.... and I have to say I'm embarrassed to call myself part of this fandom because of the way these people were talking. I mean, sure, I love the show, and I'm somewhat invested in their characters because it's my favorite show on tv right now (the only show I absolutely have to watch the second it comes on)... but criminy, people!

IT'S JUST A T.V. SHOW!

I dislike it greatly when...

I really loathe it when movies ruin books for me. Case in point: I love Meg Cabot's YA novel "Avalon High." LOVE it, so so sooooo much. I sent a copy to my 15 year old stepdaughter, and she loves it, too. So naturally we were very excited when we saw that Disney was making it into a movie. I finally got my hands on a copy of it tonight, and sat down and watched it with my 8 year old.

I hate you, Disney script writers.

You took what was one of my absolute favorite books of all time and completely ruined it. The story was excellent the way it was - why go and completely change it? I'm all for empowering girls - I am a Girl Scout leader, and a mom of 4 girls of my own, so I understand that girls can have low self-esteem, feel inferior to boys, etc etc - I GET IT. I so do. You wanna empower girls? Awesome. Go for it. I'm behind you 100%. But not when it comes to screwing with something I love.

Stupid Disney.

So fed up.

I am so, SO fed up with people telling me they're going to do something and then just NOT doing it. If someone asks me to do something and I actually commit to doing it, I DO IT. Someone else is counting on me and it is not in my nature to just drop the ball and let someone else figure out how to pick up the pieces of the mess I've left.

Why can't other people be considerate enough to do that?

PEOPLE. IF YOU MAKE A COMMITMENT TO SOMETHING, IT IS NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY TO COVER YOUR BUTT FOR YOU. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING THAT YOURSELF.

It's called being a responsible, mature adult.

ugh

I am really feeling like crap today. I didn't have a good night last night, and today my throat is hurting and my head is still aching. It seems like anymore I have a constant headache, and nothing helps it. I still have a ton of books sitting on my nightstand, but since reading gives me a migraine (I need new glasses, my old ones are nearly 10 years old and scratched to heck and back, therefore they're unusable), it's hard to get through them. I want to get through Red Riding Hood and Beastly before the movies come out in a couple of weeks (Red Riding Hood comes out March 11 and Beastly comes out March 4).

So... does anyone have any good funny books to recommend? I loved the Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging series, and I liked A Match Made In High School. Anything along those lines would be great.

Happy Wednesday to all - hope it's better than mine's looking to be...

I stand...

Re-listening to some old favorite cds tonight, and falling in love with some new ones as well. May I recommend some to you?

Idina Menzel - I Stand
Love, beyond love, this album. Her voice is amazing. A small sample, if you will: "I Stand" - title track.

Mark Salling - Pipe Dreams
Yes, this is the same Mark Salling who plays Puck on Glee. I didn't expect much when I listened to this, but I was very pleasantly surprised. My first thought - "Why don't they let him do more solos?"

Erin McCarley - Love, Save the Empty
Seriously, it just doesn't get much better than Blue Suitcase.

I'd rec more, but knowing me, I'd be here all night... and why waste time? Go listen to the awesome stuff I listed! Shoo!

So I'm in my bedroom, watching the recorded episode of American Idol from tonight, and my husband is in the next room, watching highlights from the Steelers' win this past weekend... and someone particularly bad begins to sing, and I hear:

Holiday

So today the kids were home from school on holiday. Normally we would do something ohsoawesome and totally educational to celebrate and learn why the nation deemed it a holiday... but today we have just been slugs. Seriously. I got off of my butt long enough to start the crockpot to re-heat the chili I made the other day, and make some fresh noodles for the non-chili eaters in the house for lunch... and we made 2 more jars of lotion... and I finally got to talk to my stepdaughter today... but otherwise - slugs.

Sometimes it's nice to have a day off and actually take the day off.

Yesterday I read 3 books in one day, so today I have a massive headache (I don't have insurance, have had the same pair of prescription glasses since 2002, and I can't wear them because the lenses are scratched... therefore reading gives me massive headaches). You'll notice my latest book on the 52 books list (previous post) says it was finished today and not yesterday, but that's a technicality. I finished at two minutes past midnight, so I had to count it for today.

But now I am also out of books to read. I have some on hold at the library - but it's also closed, due to the holiday. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow, which promises to be a busy day - and not the fun kind of busy, either.

My oldest daughter is about to switch ADD medicine, and she's super nervous about it. Nothing I say or do really seems to comfort her or allay her fears... so she has retreated into the world of House of Anubis, and I'm not going to disturb her from it. The longer she doesn't have to worry about it, the better. Sigh.

Got two whole tops of baby doll quilts pieced together. Need to get off of my lazy slug butt and go finish blocking the last two quilt tops, so I can have my sister show me how to finish them off on Wednesday when she comes.

Welcome to the New Blog!

Welcome to my new blog! I have a couple of different gmail accounts, and it was a pain in the butt that every time I wanted to update my other blog, I had to log out and log back in under my old username. So here we are... part deux!

Today was a productive day, even though I've felt flu-ish all day. Achey and gross, ugh. I made 7 batches of homemade lotion (tangerine scented, ohsoyummy). Then I made 2 different kinds of sugar scrubs, which my girls used as soon as I made them (seriously, they made up excuses to get into the shower immediately after I made them). I also made some copycat Wendy's chili in the crockpot so I don't have to keep getting up, since standing makes me feel woozy right now.

Unfortunately, my feeling woozy and achey and general ooginess caused me to have to call church and tell them that I couldn't volunteer tonight (I volunteer every Saturday night to do check-in for the childcare). That sucks, because that's one of the highlights of my week.

...and now that the girls are enjoying the homemade lotion and scrubs, they are in there plotting evilly about what mom's next batch should smell like. They have also informed me, in no uncertain terms, that I am going to make homemade deodorant and homemade chapstick.

Now it's off to watch the Steelers/Ravens in their dogfight, and pray that the Steelers win - otherwise my husband is going to be impossible to live with for the next several weeks....
